18-YEAR OLD CREATES HISTORY AND BRINGS HONOR TO COLLEGE AND HOME CLUB

Chan Kai Vernn Has Set A New Benchmark
Tunku Abdul Rahman College (TARC) student, Chan Kai Vernn made his college proud by becoming the youngest golfer to win in the country’s longest and biggest amateur golf tournament. The Carlsberg Golf Classic had an exciting finish in the gross event at Kelab Golf Sg Petani on 3rd August with Vernn winning it by a four stroke margin from the runner-up. It also marked a remarkable year for Vernn to create history to become the youngest golfer to clinch victory at 18 years 2 months of age.

Father and Son

“It feels pretty good,” Vernn said of his victory and took home a Sharp 32 inch LED Television and a Trophy for his golden effort. He qualifies automatically to play in the national finals in December represent his golf club. “I had a strong gut feeling that I was going to win and it happened,” continued Vernn who started golf at age 5.

Vernn hopes that more teenagers would pick up golf and Junior Golf can be developed further not only at his home club but across the country too. Supportive of the idea was T.M. Sachithanantham, the Chairman of Kelab Golf Sg Petani.

“I don’t doubt his golfing skills. He’s our champion and by doing so brought honor to our club. After seeing his performance, I’m inspired to promote junior golf further at Kelab Golf Sg Petani. Golf is the only activity that brings us all together,” said a happy Sachithanantham who lectures at the Teachers Training College in Jitra, Kedah.

Sharing the same sentiments was Ivan Ho, the general manager of Ponderosa Golf Club. He believes a good driving range and a good golf teaching pro must work in tandem in order to promote the game to Juniors. “The golf pro must be friendly to the young children. There are many families living nearby and we can make golf as a family sport at Ponderosa. Many parents are adamant in sending their children over during the school holidays. We started one program in early March and it was very supportive. Currently the junior program is headed by Pro Vali,” concluded Ivan who plans to get the new driving range in operation coming June 2015.

The most recent Carlsberg Golf Classic preliminary (leg number tenth) was played at Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club on 9th August. In his thank you speech, Henrik Juel Anderson, managing director of Carlsberg Marketing at KLGCC thanked the generosity and kindness of all the 120 participants.

“This year we aimed to raise over RM120,000 and these contributions will be channeled to selected charity homes across Malaysia to help subsidise their utility bill support and petrol costs for a year. We hope this support can improve their lives. On behalf of Carlsberg, thank you everyone for being here today. It is truly appreciated. Cheers!”

Winners at KLGCC
Three charity homes were selected and presented respectively with RM10,000 each at KLGCC. Carlsberg extends a special Thank You to official partners Mercedes-Benz, Sharp, Liberty Golf Services, Titoni, FootJoy, TaylorMade, Ogawa, Brother, Dalmore, ParGolf, Listerine, Gatorade and Sunplay.

Meet Augustine

Everyone must emulate "Uncle Augustine". At 80 years old the Samarahan Country Club member from Kuching, Sarawak is full of life. When I left the golf club, I was nearly in tears and I told him that we should have met early in life. He believes in fate. The oldest golfer at Samarahan CC who believes that hardwork and honesty is vital for one to prosper in life. God bless this man and I hope he will have a long life and good health too.
